Mobile roaming charges face an immediate hike if there is a No Deal Brexit, the government has confirmed.
Tory ministers are revoking the EU law which guarantees UK citizens pay the same for using their phone on the Continent as they do at home. That will leave mobile phone firms free to hike costs whenever they like after the UK leaves. Guaranteed free roaming launched across the EU just 20 months ago - and meant big savings. But that guarantee will be scrapped if there is no deal, thanks to an obscure law laid before Parliament this week. The current system caps the costs charged between EU and UK phone operators, letting them pass on the savings to customers. But the Mobile Roaming (EU Exit) Regulations admit these caps will have no legal force if there is no Brexit deal. That means phone giants could see their wholesale costs spiral, making roaming packages unaffordable and forcing them to push up costs, the government warns. Under the new rules, customers will still be prompted once they've spent £45 to prevent massive accidental bills. Travellers will also be prompted when they've hit 80% and 100% of their data allowance. But it will spell the end of 'guaranteed' free roaming across the EU, notes on the new law admit. Costs are kept down by capping charges between different phone firms - but these caps would have no legal force after Oct 31st. Alex Neill of consumer group Which? told HuffPost UK: Any return to sky-high charges for using mobile phones abroad would be a bitter blow for millions of consumers. The government should seek to avoid these charges by securing a deal with the EU. But if that is not the outcome, companies must be absolutely clear about any extra charges their customers could be facing.
Back when warnings first emerged about an end to roaming, the government insisted firms would not hike charges because of market competition. But MoneySavingExpert revealed last week that just two out of 12 major UK phone firms have guaranteed to keep free roaming in a No Deal Brexit . Most said they had no plans to raise charges - but stopped short of giving a cast-iron guarantee. Consumer groups lobbied the government to keep roaming free by law.
But after 'careful consideration' the government did not agree, because it would pass all the costs on to phone firms. That, in turn, could have pushed up the cost of mobile phone tariffs overall to compensate, an explanatory note to the new law says. Shadow Brexit minister Jenny Chapman said: These proposals prove that it will be holidaymakers and businesses that are forced to pay the price for this government's incompetence.
